Biomass Energy Technology - Tree Plantation biomass energy

In northern European countries, such as Sweden or Denmark, pellets are used to fire biomass district heating or combined heat and power (CHP) plants.

A market known as co-firing is growing rapidly, whereby pellets are used to partially substitute coal in large power plants in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. Demand for wood pellets is growing at a rapid rate with many European power companies investing in future wood pellet tree plantations as far away as Canada and the United States.

Unfortunately, these power plants are using wood pellets made up of softwoods that have substantially lower BTU rates than hardwoods. Supplying these companies with hardwood wood pellets wood dramatically increase their power production and at the same cost of using softwood pellets thereby increasing both profits and their capacity to deliver more power.

A BTU (British Thermal Units) is a measure of heat (energy) produced from a single cord of wood The BTU comparison chart below illustrates the advantages of planting superior tall tree plantation hardwood seedlings instead of less dense softwoods.

BTU Comparison Chart

Black Locust is our choice for a wood pellet tree plantation due to its high ranking on the BTU chart, its rapid growth, it's quick time to harvest and it's multiple stem stump regeneration properties.
