(Time of Planting)
(Tree Care)

1. Time of Planting
Neem trees can survive even in very harsh environments, but planting at the right time ensures rapid growth.
Monsoon (June-August): The best time to plant a Neem seedling is during the early or mid-monsoon season (Asharh-Shrabon). Rainwater provides plenty of moisture in the soil, which helps the new seedling's roots settle and spread quickly.
Spring and Summer: Apart from the monsoon, Neem seedlings can also be planted during the spring (Falgun-Chaitra) or early summer (Baishakh) months. However, since the weather is dry during this time, you must keep a strict eye on regular watering until the seedling is fully established in the soil.
Time of Sowing Seeds: Neem fruits ripen in May-June. Collecting freshly fallen ripe seeds directly from the tree and sowing them in the soil or polybags will yield beautiful seedlings right at the beginning of the monsoon.
2. Tree Care
The Neem tree can generally grow on its own without much care and easily adapts to adverse environments. However, providing some care in the initial stages helps the tree grow faster and healthier.
Soil and Drainage: Neem trees can grow in almost all types of soil. However, it thrives best in sandy loam soil. Although the tree can tolerate drought, it absolutely cannot tolerate waterlogging. Therefore, you must choose a spot or pot where rainwater or irrigation water does not accumulate.
Sunlight: Neem requires plenty of sunlight. The tree should be planted in a location where it receives direct sunlight all day or for at least 6-8 hours a day. The growth of Neem is significantly hindered in shaded areas.
Irrigation Management: After planting the seedling, regular watering is required for the first few months (especially during the dry season). Once the seedling is well-established in the soil and the tree grows a bit, it no longer requires frequent watering. It can thrive solely on natural rainfall.
Fertilizer Application: Neem trees do not require much chemical fertilizer. Mixing well-rotted cow dung, leaf compost, or vermicompost into the soil when planting the seedling strengthens the tree's foundation. If planted in a pot, mixed organic fertilizer can be applied once or twice a year.
Pruning: To help the tree grow with a straight and well-formed structure, some unnecessary lower branches can be pruned when it is small. Mature trees, however, do not require much pruning.
